About

what chantal's about:

design. sustainability. art.

Chantal Marks is an experienced graduate of architecture and a set and costume designer with a background in scenic art, commissioned portrait and mural paintings and dancing.

While focusing on her architecture studies at the University of Adelaide she was invited to produce set designs for Wilderness School. Nine productions later, she had built a colourful body of work and strong rapport with directors Roger Masters and Melissa Sheldon. Working with Troppo Architects, under the guidance of the world-recognised sustainable architect, Phil Harris, Chantal was able to begin dreaming of a dual career.

Chantal moved to Melbourne aiming to balance roles as a set designer and scenic artist while maintaining her practice in architecture on site specific, environmentally sensitive projects. In 2014, Chantal studied a Postgraduate Diploma of Performance Creation (Design) at the Victorian College of the Arts and was selected as the recipient of the Trina Parker Scholarship. During the One Act Plays Season in October 2014, she was the set and costume designer for Sarah Kane's '4.48 Psychosis', directed by Justin Nott.

Chantal is drawn to the rapid pace of concept to realisation and the collaborative opportunities that arise when designing for live performance. She also looks forward to designing lasting structures in her architecture practice that have a sense of place and work with the environment, not against it.
